Ryan Reynolds has been a popular pick to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, and the star has responded to his casting rumors in a funny tweet.
Ryan Reynolds has responded to rumors that he might play Johnny Cage in the next Mortal Kombat movie with a funny tweet. The Deadpool star has been a popular pick to play the character, who’s teased for Mortal Kombat 2 in the film’s final scene. No official casting news has been released, and they as of yet have no concrete plans from Warner Bros. to produce another Mortal Kombat movie.
Johnny Cage was a hot topic of conversation leading up to Mortal Kombat’s release, specifically because he wasn’t in it. Every other original fighter from the first MK arcade game appears in the film, including Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Kano (Josh Lawson), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), and Shang Tsung (Chin Han). Cage has been confirmed for the hypothetical sequel, however, and Reynolds has been one of several names thrown around as a popular choice.

In response to the casting rumors, Reynolds took to Twitter with a funny post comparing a victory in Mortal Kombat to the success of Mint Mobile, the cellular service provider partially owned by Reynolds. The tweet is accompanied by a GIF of Johnny Cage with Reynolds’ face, with “Mint” and “Big Wireless” written on the video game health bars. It’s a very Ryan Reynolds way to address the Mortal Kombat casting rumors, and an oddly compelling case for him playing the role. Check out the tweet below:
Mortal Kombat producer, Todd Garner, has mentioned Reynolds as the kind of actor who might play Johnny Cage, which has given hopeful fans something slightly more to hang onto than mere conjecture. Given the impressive performance the film has had both at the box office and on HBO Max, a sequel seems incredibly likely. With Cage promised to feature in that sequel, casting rumors around the character will likely only grow.
Of course, Johnny Cage won’t be Mortal Kombat 2’s only addition. A number of other major game characters were teased in the reboot as well, including Princess Kitana, Noob Saibot, and Nightwolf. With decades of game lore to pull from, future films have a lot of potential and many places they could go. As long as the action stays as strong as it is in Mortal Kombat, the film franchise could have a bright future ahead.
