1. Peanuts

Peanuts are among the most frequently encountered allergens. They can trigger severe, possibly life-threatening reactions. An allergic reaction to peanuts can be unpredictable, even in tiny amounts. The reason for this is due to the immune system of your body, which recognizes that peanut proteins as detrimental, and triggers symptoms.

Skin contact that isn’t frequent will not usually cause any problems unless the area is in contact with your nose, eyes or mouth. Unintentional cross-contamination can occur because of eating food that is exposed to peanuts in preparation.

Symptoms and signs of an allergic response to peanuts include:

  • Runny nose
  • Skin reactions, such as itching, hives, redness or swelling
  • Tingling in the mouth and throat
  • Digestive problems, such as diarrhea, vomiting or nausea
  • Tightening of the throat
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing

If there is a severe allergen, anaphylaxis could be the result, requiring treatment with epinephrine, or the immediate visit to an emergency room. Anaphylaxis symptoms may include:

  • Constriction of airways or throat
  • Severe drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
